Stroh started a large-scale liqueur and brandy production in Klagenfurt in 1857, with roots dating back to 1832. The company was named after its founder, Botijan Stroh, who founded the tiny enterprise in St. Paul (Carinthian Lavanttal). Maria Stroh, his widow, carried on the company with manufacturing operations at Karfreitstrasse 18 in Klagenfurt.

Because the enterprise was situated in the landlocked Austria-Hungary territory, it had no immediate access to parts of tropical areas with rum or a simple route to rum imports. To create a rum-like item, the manufacturer substituted the scent of sugarcane molasses with a blend of flavor and coloring applied to sugar beet alcohol, which became recognized as Stroh Inlander-Rum ('domestic rum'). This vintage replacement produced a unique product with a butterscotch and vanilla aroma. It quickly became a local favorite, earning a gold medal prize at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris.

The main product of STROH is rum. The rum has a history that dates back to the Austro-Hungarian reign. During the period, the sailors of the regal Austro-Hungarian naval ship were given a daily supply of rum for social and medicinal reasons. Since 2008, legislation has mandated that Stroh be manufactured entirely in Austria using sugarcane molasses, making it a regionally protected Austrian liquor specialty and remarkable in the worldwide realm of spirits. For over 185 years, the Genuine STROH Inländer Rum has been impressed with its pleasing smell, subtle rum note, and natural and fragrant flavor. STROH goods are still made entirely in Austria following a secret family formula. STROH stands for 'The Spirit of Austria'.

In Klagenfurt, STROH is among Austria's oldest liquor makers, best known as the STROH Original Inländer Rum, which people in Austria love to refer to as STROH Rum.

STROH spirits have been enticing with their original and fragrant flavor for over 185 years. STROH Inländer Rum is now a spirits specialty found in restaurants and bars in over 40 countries across the globe. In 2019, the share of exports was 75%, with the majority of it going to Germany, Scandinavia, South Africa, the Benelux nations, and travel shops.

"STROH is an all-rounder", says Harold Burstein, managing director of STROH Austria. He added, "We've discovered a home in various settings, including Christmas markets, worldwide award-winning food, ski chalets in the mountains, and fashionable pubs in Cape Town. The acquaintance with STROH is undoubtedly an emotional tale in Austria. It mixes STROH with our childhood memories and the delightful aroma and exquisite cakes and cookies taste. For years, STROH has represented baking history and the craft of bakeries, which helped Austrian pastry cuisine and coffee house lifestyle become worldwide recognized. That is something we are proud of."

STROH Rum is famous not just for its distinct scent but also for its vintage bottle packaging with the orange label. The classic curving hip flask dates back to the American Prohibition period when it was critical to be able to conceal the delectable product on the body and carry it undetected. Presently, the STROH bottle is an aesthetic symbol in the world of spirits, going back to its rebranding in 2004 and gaining worldwide recognition since then. Indeed, the continuous bottle design has dramatically benefited the brand's recognition in Austria and globally. As a result, many travelers bring STROH Rum back home as a favorite Austrian gift to enjoy 'The Spirit of Austria' in their homeland.
