La Favorite 2017 Les Freres de la Cote 3yo 56.5% 700ml information

The La Favorite 2017 Les Freres de la Cote 3yo rum is a distinguished expression from the renowned family-owned distillery of La Favorite in Martinique. Distilled in 2017, this rum is crafted from pure sugarcane juice, classifying it as a rum agricole. It was aged for 26 months in oak barrels within the distillery's aging cellar before being carefully selected by Les Freres de la Cote. In early 2020, the sailing ship Tres Hombres made its third consecutive visit to Martinique, where Les Freres de la Cote re-casked this rum into an Armagnac Jean Cave barrel. The ship then began a six-month transatlantic voyage, during which the cask was exposed to the sea's motion, imparting a unique dynamic aging process. The rum was subsequently bottled in Saint-Etienne in November 2020.

Boasting a formidable 56.5% ABV and a 700ml volume, this rum presents a complex profile that evolves gracefully on the palate. Initial dry, fresh, and invigorating notes pave the way for a peppery mid-palate, followed by vegetal and subtly fruity undertones that reveal its rum agricole nature. Despite its young age of three years, the aging process has imparted a remarkable roundness and maturity.

On the nose, the rum exudes aromas of precious wood, various confitures, black cherry, cigar, chocolate, nougatine, and dried fruits, enhancing the overall tasting experience. This exquisite rum was limited to just 2100 bottles, making it a rare and sought-after gem for connoisseurs.

  • Is this rum suitable for aging?

While it is already aged for 26 months and further matured during the transatlantic journey, additional aging is not necessary but can be done according to personal preference.

  • How potent is the alcohol content?

With an ABV of 56.5%, this rum is quite potent and best enjoyed in moderation.

  • What makes this rum unique?

The unique aging process during the six-month transatlantic voyage and re-casking into an Armagnac Jean Cave barrel contribute to its distinctive flavor profile and dynamic complexity.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Sweet ripe prunes, citrus fruits, iodine, woody aromas, hazelnut, waxes, sandalwood.
  • Taste: Sweetness, dry spicy palate, anise, roasted almonds, young wood, citrus notes, cocoa, sugarcane.
  • Finish: Peppery warmth, sweet notes, gingerbread, wood.

Overall: This rum offers a complex and youthful profile, characterized by its sweet and spicy notes, youthful character, and a lingering spicy and woody finish.

Reviewer's Opinion

Opinions on this rum are mixed. Some find it a bit young with an overwhelming presence of prunes, while others appreciate its powerful aroma and pleasantly balanced taste. The rum is noted for its hints of Armagnac, woody and iodine notes, and a finish that evokes the sensation of being at sea. Overall, it is considered a smooth and pleasant rum, though its youthfulness may not appeal to everyone.
