Plantation Original Dark Double Aged 40% 700ml information

The Plantation Original Dark Double Aged rum is a premium blend of elegant Trinidad and Tobago vintages, aged for 2 to 6 years in old bourbon barrels. Produced by the renowned Ferrand cognac house, this rum showcases a smooth and fine texture that masterfully balances the lively Caribbean spirit with French elegance.

The aroma of this exquisite rum is characterized by hints of black peppercorn, clove, cinnamon, baked cherry, prune, molasses, and later, forest leaves, black tea, and dry stone. On the palate, it reveals fruity notes of white raisins and dried pineapple, with an off-dry profile transitioning into a spicy, piquant, minerally, and significantly drier midpalate. The spicy finish adds a lasting impression.

This rum combines the rich and intense styles of Jamaica and Barbados, enhanced by meticulous blending and further maturation in France. The result is a profound structure, spiced with notes of cinnamon and clove, and a smoky quality that adds texture. It's an ideal component for cocktails.

In 2015, the Plantation Original Dark Rum was reimagined with a new recipe, blending rums from Barbados and Jamaica to be more approachable and cocktail-friendly. The rum is further aged in Cognac casks, which imparts a fruity richness, making it more accessible with its revamped recipe.

The rum is a premium blend of molasses rums, initially aged in their countries of origin, Barbados and Jamaica. The Barbados rum is aged for 1-3 years, while the Jamaican rum, distilled in pot stills, is aged for 10-15 years. These rums are then blended together and further aged in France, resulting in a profound structure spiced with notes of cinnamon and clove, whose smoky quality adds texture.

Overall, the Plantation Original Dark Double Aged rum is a blend of elegant Trinidad and Tobago vintages, aged for 2 to 6 years in old bourbon barrels. Produced by the Ferrand cognac house, it is known for its smooth and fine texture, aromatic complexity, and fruity palate, making it an ideal companion for cocktails.

Reviewer's opinion

  • "I love this Original Dark. In my opinion, the best value for money."
  • "A sweetened blend with a round appearance, definitely with Jamaican content. Lots of fruit with honey and some smoky wood. Dominantly sweet and round in the mouth, with woody spicy notes and spicy tobacco. Almost complex but the finish is somewhat weak, tasting artificially like caramelized strawberry or banana. Nevertheless, for the price, it's quite a good entry-level rum."
  • "Very good to drink in a Cuba Libre! I use proportions of 1/8 juicy lime, 50ml of this rum, and 120ml of cola (I prefer cola zero or Pepsi max)."
  • "Smell 7/10, Taste 7/10, Aftertaste 7.5/10, Image 7.5/10 (info about rum, bottle, carton-box, sugar-free, marketing), Total impression 7/10. Added sugar (estimated 18-20 g/l), Price is good, Biggest surprise among the cheap sweetened rums."
  • "Pure, not bad but a bit too boring and watery. Smell somewhat alcoholic but better/more exciting than the taste. Very short finish. Was often recommended to mix with cola, but for me, much too sweet and 'dark', the freshness is missing. As part of a Mai Tai, it's very tasty!"
  • "The nose is full of honey and raisin with estery funk in the background. A little orange lingers with a touch of tobacco. It's definitely on the sweet side. The palate is less funky than the nose, less fruit-forward too. There's some oaky notes and the tobacco and honey from the nose are present. I picked up a subtle pineapple hint in the background. The finish is a little hot compared to the palate. The honey still lingers but now it has been smoked. Overall, this rum is a steal for the price. Not fancy but something I can sip for days. Doesn't work for me in mixed drinks though, odd."
  • "Not bad for the price range."
  • "Great rum available for a very small price. Super for mixing."
  • "Nice rum good with a cigar."
  • "Sweet. Brown sugar with spices and barrel aging."
  • "Quite decent neat but not particularly impressive. Powerful blender. I have found it to be a really good addition to hot cocoa."
  • "One should not expect miracles, but for simple drinks certainly not bad!"
  • "Perfect mixer for the price."
  • "Barbados and Jamaican styles are among my favorites so of course, I find this rum to be lovely. Not very complex but the flavors are wonderful. Buttery sweet caramel spice. Goes down way too easy neat! I have not really experimented with this too much in cocktails but probably would be nice in a grog or anything that would benefit from a full-bodied, sweet, and buttery rum. The price point on this is well below my enjoyment level so I look for the 1.75L bottles haha."
  • "Super price/performance... goes pure and is great for mixing."
