Glen Scotia has launched the "Icons of Campbeltown" series, and the first version is the Single Malt Scotch whisky 12YO "The Mermaid" No.1. This stunning bottle is a collaboration with artist Joel Holtzman, known for his work with Lucasfilm, Marvel, Disney, and Macmillan. The design is inspired by the mermaids that have been frequently sighted in the Campbeltown area.
Glen Scotia is a small distillery in Campbeltown that has been distilling the region's characteristic spicy and maritime whiskies since 1832. The distillery was crowned as the 'Scottish distillery of the year' and the distillery of the best single malt whisky in the world in 2021.
The 'Icons of Campbeltown' series aims to bring the location of the distillery, Campbeltown, back into the spotlight. The first edition is inspired by the historical mermaid carving located in the market cross area of Campbeltown. This single malt is matured in bourbon casks and skillfully finished in Palo Cortado sherry casks, resulting in a wonderfully rounded flavor with subtropical, floral, and delicate aromas. It is presented at a robust 54.1% ABV, unfiltered, and at natural color.
The whisky has aromas of maritime salt crystals, boat varnish, and edible seaweed, topped with notes of tarte tatin, marmalade, and tablet toffee. The creamy palate brings sweet French apple tart and a pinch of salt, followed by a long, warming, and spicy finish.
This limited edition Campbeltown single malt whisky pays tribute to the mermaid and is matured exclusively in the finest bourbon barrels. It is an unpeated 12-year-old that has been finished for eight months in Palo Cortado sherry casks, a rare choice of wood that is almost as special and hard to find as mermaids.
