The Kilkerran 12yo is a lightly peated, non-chill filtered single malt Scotch whisky from the Glengyle Distillery, located in the Campbeltown region of Scotland. This is the first permanent release from the distillery, which was reopened in 2004 after being closed for almost 80 years. The whisky has a moderate peatiness with mineral and vegetal notes, such as sand, chalk, seaweed, eucalyptus, and camphor. It also has a nice sweetness with candied lemons, pineapple, white fruit juices, and quince paste. The palate is just as rich, with the peat carried by mineral and vegetal notes, lemon juice, pineapple, farmhouse cream, malt, and pastry. The finish is fresher, with a slightly smoky return and notes of liquorice, pineapple, lemon in all its forms, and quince paste.

The Kilkerran 12yo is aged for 12 years in a combination of 70% bourbon casks and 30% sherry casks. The distillery uses locally sourced barley, with most of it being bought from the Scottish east coast and some from the region itself. The malting is done by the neighboring Springbank distillery. The malted barley is then ground into meal using an old Craigellachie mill. The grist is then mashed with hot water to create a beer with 5% alcohol, which is then fermented for 72-110 hours. The distillation is done in the refurbished equipment of the former Ben Wyvis distillery. This whisky is slightly peated and has no added coloring. It is a sensational first age-statement release from the Glengyle distillery, where the stills were fired up again after being dormant for almost 13 years. The nose has a touch of smoke, red cherry, hazelnut, and toasted marshmallow. The palate has a good dose of orange peel, butterscotch, vanilla, and raw honey. The finish is smooth, with lemon-creme, and a splash of sea air.
