The Daftmill 2006 Single Cask 039/2006 is an exceptional single malt whisky from the family-owned and operated Daftmill Distillery, nestled in the picturesque Kingdom of Fife. This distinctive expression was bottled exclusively for Berry Bros & Rudd and originates from cask #39, a first-fill sherry butt. The cask was filled with Daftmill spirit on July 25th, 2006, and was bottled at a potent cask strength of 57.4% ABV in 2019. The yield from this cask was a mere 621 bottles, making it a truly rare gem. Daftmill is a unique farm distillery where the Cuthbert family meticulously grows the malting barley used to create this remarkable lowland whisky on their own estate. Distillation occurs only during the farm's less busy periods—midsummer and winter—resulting in a limited production of as few as 100 casks per year. This single cask whisky is a quintessential representation of the Daftmill style and was chosen democratically by the Royal Mile Whiskies tasting team. The barley for this whisky was harvested from the farm's Dam Park and Curling Pond fields on August 31st, 2004. The Chariot barley used was among the last to be malted in Fife by Robert Kilgour & Co before they closed. Notably, this expression marks the first sherry-matured release of Daftmill whisky. As one of only two sherry butts filled by Daftmill in 2006, this bottle is a rare opportunity to own a piece of whisky history, with this being their only planned sherried offering. The whisky boasts a rich, dark profile with heavy sherry influences. On the nose, it features dark fruits, dates, and dark toffee, with a hint of sulfur and burnt matches. The palate is rich and thick, reminiscent of old Glen Grant sherry casks, and offers notes of dates, spices, treacle toffee, and ginger cakes. The finish remains spicy and slightly tart, with additional fruitiness when water is added.
This whisky is unique due to its origin from a first-fill sherry butt, one of only two filled by Daftmill in 2006, and it represents the distillery's first sherry-matured release.
This exclusive release was bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd, a renowned wine and spirits merchant.
The cask yielded just 621 bottles, making it a rare and sought-after release.
This expression from Daftmill is a captivating departure from their usual bourbon cask offerings. The heavy sherry influence does mask some of the distillate's subtler notes, but it results in a rich, complex, and rewarding dram. The dark fruits and spices dominate, making it a fascinating whisky, especially for those who appreciate sherry-matured profiles. While it may not be everyone's preference, it stands as a testament to Daftmill's versatility and skill.
