The Port Charlotte 2012 Islay Barley is a singular expression of Islay's rich whisky heritage, crafted meticulously at the renowned Bruichladdich distillery. This single malt whisky, with a peat level of 40 ppm, is made from 100% Islay-grown barley sourced from seven local farms, namely Coull, Starchmill Island, Mulindry, Dunlossit Estate, Cruach, Rockside, and Sunderland Farms. The barley was harvested in 2011, and the whisky was distilled in 2012. This heavily peated Islay malt was matured for 6 years in oak casks, with 75% of the whisky being stored in first-fill American whiskey casks and the remaining 25% in second-fill French wine casks. This unique aging process gives the whisky a rich and complex flavor profile. The tasting notes unveil a captivating aroma, initially presenting fresh linen and a sandy sea breeze, followed by zesty lemon, green fruit, apple sauce, crunchy pears, floral geranium, sea pinks, gooseberry, creamy coconut dipped in chocolate, muddy peat smoke, burnt heather, peach skin, hints of vanilla, and toasted malt. On the palate, the whisky is soft and sweet, with a thin honey style that glides smoothly. There are immediate notes of vanilla, milk chocolate, light cedar, black pepper, warmed scones, honey derived from the malt, earthy smoke, and soft apricot. The Port Charlotte 2012 Islay Barley masterfully showcases the exceptional quality of the spirit, the meticulous distillation process, and the locally-sourced barley.
